The CAREGIVING SYMPOSIUM, brought to you by the Boulder County Area Agency on Aging, is the annual educational and support event for family caregivers of older adults (and for the general public), which features a large resource fair, workshops on caregiving topics, complimentary refreshments, and more. (Scroll down past the event sponsors to see the full agenda after April 1.) You may choose to register for one of the following sessions: 

  • morning session: 8:30 a.m. - 12:15 pm.

               Or

  •  afternoon session: 12:30 - 4:15 p.m (topics from morning repeated)

               Or

  •   9:30 a.m.  - 2:30 p.m.

Registration is free, though pre-registration by May 15.  (Walk ins may be allowed, space permitting.)  Assistance for respite care (substitute elder care) is available.

Public Transportation: If it is feasible for you, we recommend taking advantage of public transportation in getting to this event. RTD's JUMP has scheduled stops at  both 55th and Arapahoe, and 63rd and Arapahoe, and one can request a stop between these two,  at Oreg and Arapahoe. From here it is a very short walk (400 feet) to the JCC.

Directions to the Jewish Community Center (JCC): The JCC is at 6007 Oreg Ave, in Boulder. To get there turn south onto Oreg Ave from Arapahoe, between 55th and 63rd. The JCC will be on your right. There will be some parking at the JCC with parking attendants to guide you, as well as remote parking at the Flatirons Golf course. Buses will be available to transport those parking at the golf course, back and forth to the JCC.  Please allow extra time for parking and bus transport to the event, should you need to park remotely.

Directions to remote parking at Flatirons Golf Course: The golf course is located 0.7 miles West of the JCC, at 5706 Arapahoe Ave.

Once you arrive at the JCC, please use the main entrance in the middle of the building, facing Oreg Ave.

We are hosting a lively agenda full of workshops and speakers for you to choose from. Session spaces vary in size, and how many they will accommodate, as indicated below. Each workshop lists the room where it will be held. First come, first seated.

 

Levin Hall: accommodates up to 150

L130: accommodates up to 65

Cardio Room: accommodates up to 45

Board Room: accommodates up to 35

Room 200: accommodates up to 45

Fitness Room: accommodates up to 20 for meditation sitting on a cushion, and up to 35 for movement session

You're Still a Caregiver: How to Be a Caregiver for Someone in Long Term Care - Brandy Queen, LPC, Seniors Counseling and Resource Education Coordinator, Longmont Senior Services, and Erica Corson, Elder Rights Program Manager and Long-Term Care Ombudsman (Cardio Room).

 

Understanding and Responding to Dementia-Related Behaviors - Brenda Garung, Alzheimer's Association of Colorado (Room 200).

Palliative Care, Hospice, and PACE: the right services at the right time - Shirley Huang, MD, MBA, FACP, TRU PACE Medical Director, Board-Certified in Geriatric Medicine, John Massone, MD, TRU Hospice Palliative Care Medical Director (Cardio Room).

 

Recognizing Depression and Suicide Risk in Older Adults - Carol Spar, PsyD, Licensed Clinical Psychologist and Kathy Valentine, HOPE Coalition of Boulder County Chairperson (Board Room).

Mindfulness Practice for Caregiving – Kathy Emery, LPC, Tammy McKaskle, LPC, and Karen Sumey, LCSW, Clinical Supervisors with Windhorse Elder Care (Fitness Room: with sitting cushions for meditation practice, no chairs in this room).
